Indiana’s top 3 environmental issues according to GreenIndy.com

1. DWINDLING OPEN SPACE, HABITATS
Indiana’s 4 percent of publicly owned land is among the lowest in the country.

2. TOXIC EMISSIONS
Indiana is third in the nation in toxic emissions, including coal ash and mercury, according to EPA data for 2007.

  • Carbonyls: acetaldehyde
  • Diisocyanates: methylenediphenyl diisocyanate ("MDI"); 2,4-toluene diisocyanate; 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate
  • Metals: arsenic; cobalt; hexavalent chromium; lead; manganese; nickel
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons ("PAHs"): benzo (a) pyrene and other PAHs; naphthalene
  • VOCs: acrolein; benzene; 1,3-butadiene
  • 4,4’-methylenedianiline ("MDA")

3. CARBON FOOTPRINT
Indiana has a per capita Carbon Score of 6, (lots of ads on this paged linked to, but its a good page) with the 14th highest resident population. Each Indiana resident produces approximately 39 Tons of Carbon Dioxide each year. Indiana has a total Carbon output state rank of #6, Indiana is the #6th highest Carbon Dioxide polluting state in the United States.
